De acordo com os cientistas, fenômeno ocorreu entre 10.000 e 15.000 anos atrás, quando a estrela tinha cerca de 10 bilhões de anos.

Pela primeira vez, cientistas capturaram uma estrela engolindo de uma só vez um planeta. As novas observações foram reveladas por astrônomos, nesta quarta-feira (3), em estudo publicado na revista “Nature”.

Segundo os cientistas, o planeta em questão era um gigante gasoso do tamanho de Júpiter – ou até mesmo maior. Já o astro é parecido com o Sol e estava inchando à medida que envelhecia por eras a fio, até que finalmente ficou tão grande que engoliu o planeta próximo da sua órbita.

Embora houvesse sinais anteriores de outras estrelas destruindo planetas, esta foi a primeira vez que a própria devoração foi observada, de acordo com o estudo.

Os cientistas apontam que o fenômeno observado é uma prévia sombria do que acontecerá com a Terra quando o nosso Sol se transformar em uma estrela gigante vermelha, engolindo o nosso planeta.

Foram necessárias observações adicionais e análise de dados para desvendar o mistério: em vez de uma estrela engolir sua estrela companheira, esta havia devorado seu planeta.
