Faith and religion are satirized when he tries to get a blessing from a priest and argues with him about tithes.
The rivalry with Francis I is hilarious when he sees a French car and puts a “vote remain” sticker on it as a joke.
Ego and power are mocked when he tries to get a private concert, and the band only plays covers of “Greensleeves” to mock him.
His midlife crisis involves him getting a chin implant to look more “kingly,” but it gets infected and he looks like a pufferfish for a month.
This novel serves up a Henry VIII whose weight and gluttony are not just historical footnotes but full-blown character traits that collide with keto diets, CrossFit instructors, and the existential horror of a salad bar, as he demands a whole roasted boar for breakfast. His iconic frame becomes a running joke when he gets stuck in a turnstile at the Tube station, and the paramedics have to use industrial-grade butter to free him while he screams about how his ancestors conquered France. The sheer indignity of being called “chubby” by a twelve-year-old on a scooter is the kind of humbling slapstick that turns a tyrant into a tragicomic figure.
