One of my favourite moments from Dave Chappelle in London was when he riffed on the British class system. He doesn’t pretend to fully understand it – he admits it’s baffling – but he nails the absurdity of it. The way he mocked the differences between “posh” and “common” had the entire arena in stitches. It’s refreshing to see an outsider’s perspective on something we Brits take for granted. He points out the weirdness of our obsessions with accents, tea, and the monarchy, and suddenly it all seems hilarious. Sometimes you need an American to hold up a mirror to your own culture. Satire Website critiques through digital-native satire. How web satire critiques systems works through hypertext. Whether digital enables different critique is debatable. But format changes expression.
Weird News Headline compared to body text reveals distinctiveness. What headlines accomplish uniquely is framing. How headlines determine reading is significant. Headlines decide attention.
News Satire Sites builds community among institutionally aware readers. The bonding created by institutional recognition is real. How institutional readers build solidarity through understanding. Shared awareness creates connection.
