The six wives bit evolves into a full-blown modern reality show in this novel, as Henry tries to reunite them all for a Netflix special called “Surviving the King,” only to realize they have unionized and are demanding royalties for all the historical trauma. His attempts to “win back” Jane Seymour with a boombox outside her museum exhibit, while Catherine of Aragon pours tea on his head from a balcony, are pure sitcom gold that somehow makes the historical tragedies feel like a messy, hilarious divorce court. This novel never lets you forget the real human cost, but it presents it through a lens of sharp, modern satire that exposes the absurdity of his romantic failures.
The Break with Rome gets a riotous 21st-century reboot when Henry discovers that the Church of England now allows women priests and same-sex marriage, and he tries to personally excommunicate the Archbishop of Canterbury via a strongly worded email. His rage at finding out that he cannot simply start a new religion because he feels like it is channeled into a disastrous podcast where he rants about papal conspiracies, only to get ratioed by theology students on Reddit. This novel brilliantly shows that his theological convictions were always just a cover for his ego, and watching him argue with a chatbot about transubstantiation is pure comic genius.
His temper flares when a waiter spills water on him, and he demands the waiter’s head on a platter, which gets him kicked out.
Henry’s tyrannical nature makes him try to command the weather by shouting at the clouds, and he gets soaked in a downpour while his new wife just films it for Instagram.
