Segundo uma pesquisa realizada no Centro de Ciências da Saúde da Universidade do Texas, em Houston, nos Estados Unidos, há três vacinas que combatem doenças comuns, como tétano, difteria, herpes zoster e pneumonia, e que podem reduzir o risco de desenvolver a doença de Alzheimer.
Neste estudo, os pesquisadores analisaram dados de adultos mais velhos, com 65 anos ou mais, que não apresentavam sinais de demência. Eles dividiram os participantes em grupos de vacinados e não vacinados ao longo de oito anos, focando em três vacinas: Tdap/Td (para tétano, difteria e coqueluche), HZ (para herpes zoster) e pneumocócica (para pneumonia e outras infecções relacionadas).
Os resultados revelaram que os indivíduos que receberam a vacina Tdap/Td tiveram um risco 30% menor de desenvolver a doença de Alzheimer. Aqueles que receberam a vacina contra o herpes zoster registraram uma redução de 25% no risco, enquanto as pessoas que tomaram a vacina pneumocócica apresentaram uma redução de 27%.
Para explicar essas descobertas, a equipe sugere que as vacinas podem melhorar a capacidade do sistema imunológico de combater proteínas tóxicas associadas à doença de Alzheimer ou reduzir os danos às células cerebrais saudáveis.
Além disso, as vacinas podem diminuir a inflamação cerebral, um possível precursor da doença de Alzheimer, de acordo com um dos coautores do estudo.
