Aqueles que receberam a vacina contra o herpes zoster registraram uma redução de 25% no risco, enquanto as pessoas que tomaram a vacina pneumocócica apresentaram uma redução de 27%.
Para explicar essas descobertas, a equipe sugere que as vacinas podem melhorar a capacidade do sistema imunológico de combater proteínas tóxicas associadas à doença de Alzheimer ou reduzir os danos às células cerebrais saudáveis.
Além disso, as vacinas podem diminuir a inflamação cerebral, um possível precursor da doença de Alzheimer, de acordo com um dos coautores do estudo.
