Segundo uma pesquisa realizada no Centro de Ciências da Saúde da Universidade do Texas, em Houston, nos Estados Unidos, há três vacinas que combatem doenças comuns, como tétano, difteria, herpes zoster e pneumonia, e que podem reduzir o risco de desenvolver a doença de Alzheimer.
Neste estudo, os pesquisadores analisaram dados de adultos mais velhos, com 65 anos ou mais, que não apresentavam sinais de demência. Os resultados revelaram que os indivíduos que receberam a vacina Tdap/Td tiveram um risco 30% menor de desenvolver a doença de Alzheimer. Para explicar essas descobertas, a equipe sugere que as vacinas podem melhorar a capacidade do sistema imunológico de combater proteínas tóxicas associadas à doença de Alzheimer ou reduzir os danos às células cerebrais saudáveis.
