Neste estudo, os pesquisadores analisaram dados de adultos mais velhos, com 65 anos ou mais, que não apresentavam sinais de demência. Os resultados revelaram que os indivíduos que receberam a vacina Tdap/Td tiveram um risco 30% menor de desenvolver a doença de Alzheimer. Aqueles que receberam a vacina contra o herpes zoster registraram uma redução de 25% no risco, enquanto as pessoas que tomaram a vacina pneumocócica apresentaram uma redução de 27%.
Para explicar essas descobertas, a equipe sugere que as vacinas podem melhorar a capacidade do sistema imunológico de combater proteínas tóxicas associadas à doença de Alzheimer ou reduzir os danos às células cerebrais saudáveis.
