Aperda auditiva, tanto temporária quanto permanente, causada pela exposição a ruídos intensos, foi tema de um novo estudo conduzido com ratos, apontando também para um possível tratamento em desenvolvimento.
Publicado na revista Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (Pnas) e liderado pela Universidade de Pittsburgh (Estados Unidos), o estudo destaca que a perda auditiva relacionada ao ruído resulta de danos celulares no ouvido interno associados ao excesso de zinco, um mineral essencial para o funcionamento celular e auditivo.
Enquanto alguns experimentam perda auditiva devido a lesões auditivas traumáticas agudas, outros observam uma perda repentina, temporária ou permanente após exposição contínua a ruídos altos, como em obras ou concertos barulhentos.
A equipe, liderada por Thanos Tzounopoulos, concentrou-se em compreender os fundamentos mecânicos dessa condição para estabelecer as bases para futuros tratamentos eficazes e minimamente invasivos.
Em experimentos com ratos e células do ouvido interno, descobriu-se que, horas após exposição a ruídos altos, os níveis de zinco no ouvido interno aumentavam significativamente. A exposição a sons altos causava uma liberação intensa de zinco, levando a danos celulares e interrompendo a comunicação normal entre as células.
