Taiwan detectou hoje a presença de 42 aviões militares chineses nas imediações da ilha, horas após a China ter anunciado o arranque de exercícios militares marítimos e aéreos em torno de Taiwan.

O Ministério da Defesa taiwanês disse que entre os aviões detectados estavam caças J-10 e J-11, sendo que 26 das 42 aeronaves atravessaram a linha mediana que separa a ilha da China continental.
Num comunicado divulgado na rede social X (antigo Twitter), o ministério acrescentou que também foram detectados oito navios militares chineses entre as incursões, que começaram por volta das 09:00.
As autoridades de Taiwan responderam com o destacamento de aviões e navios e com a ativação de sistemas de mísseis terrestres, indicou o comunicado.
Horas antes, o exército da China tinha anunciado o arranque de exercícios militares marítimos e aéreos em torno de Taiwan, num “sério aviso” aos “grupos separatistas” da ilha e às “forças externas” que os apoiam.
Em reação, o Ministério da Defesa de Taipé disse num comunicado que “condena veementemente este comportamento irracional e provocativo e enviará as forças adequadas em resposta (…) a fim de defender a liberdade, a democracia e a soberania de Taiwan”.
O Ministério dos Negócios Estrangeiros da China tinha prometido no domingo passado “medidas firmes” contra a passagem do vice-Presidente taiwanês William Lai Ching-te pelos Estados Unidos, algo que considerou ser um ataque às suas reivindicações de soberania sobre Taiwan.
William Lai voltou a Taipé na sexta-feira, depois de viajar para o Paraguai, onde participou na posse de Santiago Peña como novo Presidente daquele país, um dos poucos a reconhecer oficialmente Taiwan.
O vice-Presidente fez duas paragens em Nova Iorque e em São Francisco, tendo sido recebido por representantes do Instituto Americano de Taiwan, que atua como a embaixada norte-americana de fato na ilha, na ausência de relações diplomáticas entre Washington e Taipei.
A China considera Taiwan uma das suas províncias e não renuncia ao eventual uso da força militar para conseguir a reunificação.
O exército chinês já tinha lançado em abril manobras de três dias em torno de Taiwan, em reação a uma reunião nos Estados Unidos entre o presidente da Câmara dos Deputados norte-americana, Kevin McCarthy, e a Presidente taiwanesa, Tsai Ing-wen.
William Tai foi o escolhido pelo Partido Democrático Progressista, atualmente no poder em Taiwan, como candidato a suceder a Tsai Ing-wen nas eleições marcadas para 2024.
